Volunteer Policy
Role of Volunteers
The Case Memorial Library utilizes volunteers to enhance public
service to the community. Volunteers generally provide services
to staff and/or work on special projects.
Selection of Volunteers
Volunteers are selected based upon their qualifications and the
needs of the library at any given time.
Job Selection
Volunteers will work with and be trained by a specific supervisor.
Volunteers are expected to take directions from the supervisor
who is responsible for their work, and may be removed by that
supervisor.
Work Schedules
Volunteers will work during the hours when adequate supervision
is available. Work schedules and specific time commitments will
be arranged by each volunteer and his/her supervisor. Volunteers
who cannot meet a scheduled work assignment will inform the supervisor
in advance.
Volunteer Job Description
Requirements:
1. Willingness to work within the library environment.
2. Ability to interact with patrons and staff in a positive and
pleasant manner.
3. Dependability.
Skills:
1. Ability to follow directions.
2. Knowledge of alphabetical order.
3. Manual dexterity.
4. Some typing proficiency.
5. Organizational ability.
Duties:
Any one, but not necessarily all, of the above-listed skills will
be required to perform one or more of the following tasks:
1. Shelving of books and materials.
2. Typing spine labels and performing other functions of technical
processing.
3. Covering books with new jackets.
4. Alphabetizing and filing catalog cards.
5. Pulling catalog cards for discarded items.
6. Reading and organizing shelves.
7. Preparing of paperbacks and periodicals.
8. Organizing newspaper and periodical collection, including display
of current issues.
9. Assisting with childrens story time.
10. Delivering books to homebound patrons.
11. Working on the grounds (weeding, pruning, etc.)
12. Assisting with special library events (hosting, baking for
programs, etc.)
13. Carrying out one-time projects.
