Insects & Their Amazing Stories
Tues.,
July 29
6:30 p.m.
It's tough being a bug. Scores of other animals want
to eat you. Cold is your mortal enemy.
No matter how tiny you are, you need to find others of your
kind in this great big world.
This multimedia presentation will give us some insight into
the remarkable adaptations
these creatures have developed in order to survive.
John Himmelman has been chasing bugs throughout his life and
shares stories, sounds, and photographs of his pursuits.
Often humorous, at times horrifying, these stories should
whet the appetites for more exploration into this world.
John Himmelman has written and illustrated many books on insects,
both for children and adults*.
He is a founding director of the Connecticut Butterfly Association,
and has lectured and led trips throughout the country.
He is also a photographer and makes professional recordings
of insect songs.

Wind
Over Wings
Birds of Prey
Thurs., July 31
3:00 p.m.

This New World Vulture is thought to have the
best sense of smell of all birds in North America. Turkey Vultures
can smell spoiled meat from up to 40 miles away. They were once
observed circling over leaks in a natural gas pipeline after
engineers introduced ethyl mercaptan, the gas responsible for
the pungent odor of spoiled meat, into the pipeline. Turkey
Vultures are often spotted circling overhead on thermals created
from the heat of the afternoon sun, flying with a deep V wing
formation. Turkey Vultures are considered to be quite intelligent.
We have even heard of a special society dedicated to their intelligence!
